Back on June 11th, 2022, while running front-of-house sound at the Whisky A Go-Go (Los Angeles, CA) I met Jessica and Jackie of Dianthvs during load-in. They were opening for the Washington, D.C. Rock group ANGEL (discovered by Gene Simmons back in the 70’s). Most of the bands on that bill were glam metal but Dianthvs 100% brought the heavy. By the end of their set, everyone in the building was locked into their captivating performance. For me, they had that Kittie ‘Oracle’-era magnetism mixed in with Killswitch Engages’ melodic metalcore elements. Since then, I’ve been keeping tabs on their output and it looks like they’re working on a new album slated for a 2026 release...

I know you’ve been working on a new album for awhile now. Is there a particular theme to this upcoming release? How does it differ from your previous output? (Jackie) Yes, we’ve been working on album number three for quite some time. We are trying a lot of new things with our sound. We don’t want to reveal too much of the main theme because we want that to be a surprise, but we can share that it touches on concepts of rebirth, growth, overcoming dark trials, and self-actualization. We are also excited to say that this will be our first-ever studio album to feature harsh vocals and screams. This is one of the biggest noticeable changes in our sound compared to our other releases.

Throughout your discography, you weave many styles into your metal sound, including classical elements. Did the both of you have formal classical training? (Jessica) Yes, we are both classically-trained in piano. It was the very first instrument that we were both introduced to at an early age. We took formal lessons around the age of seven and learned from an incredibly gifted teacher named Ms. Elsie, who helped us grow so much in our music. We can definitely say that if it wasn’t for our classical upbringing in piano, we wouldn’t be able to play the music we do now in Dianthvs. The genres of classical and metal really help us achieve balance in our music, and we are happy we are able to tap into both simultaneously when we’re in our band. I’m a huge fan of Frédéric Chopin and Jackie enjoys playing a lot of Baroque-era pieces, as well as contemporary classics, especially from movies like the “Titanic”.

My favorite songs of yours are “Secrets and Promises” (from the 2022 album ‘Realms’) and the 2023 single “Alive in the Moonlight”. What were the inspirations for these compositions? Anything interesting or cool transpire during those tracking sessions? (Jessica) Thank you so much for sharing your favorites with us! In life, sometimes we find ourselves in situations where we have the option to stay and give someone the benefit of the doubt or move on in a different direction. The inspiration behind our song “Secrets & Promises” is about making that choice to prioritize your own happiness and move forward on a more positive path. The lyrics in the song echo the remnants of the dark memories. The way this song came to be was very interesting...it actually started off as a soft piano ballad. It was also one of the last songs we wrote for the album. After looking at all of our tracks, we decided to completely modify the arrangement and make it a heavier track with drums present. We are still pondering the thought of resurrecting its original form ...but we shall see about that in the future. (Jackie) “Alive in the Moonlight” is for the night owls. This song is an anthem to everyone that comes alive at night. We ourselves are more creative and inspired in the evening hours, writing most of our music at that time. We had fun incorporating some Halloween elements on this track, both lyrically and artistically with the vision of the single artwork. “Alive in the Moonlight” is a very special song to us because it was the first track where we debuted a harsh vocal sound in our music.

Who are Dianthvs’ primary musical influences? Since you formed back in 2015, how much have these influences changed or evolved over time? (Jessica) Our musical influences are all over the place. We pull our sound from all sorts of genres, from Classical/Romantic-era piano compositions to metalcore outfits like Killswitch Engage and Motionless in White. The band that definitely propelled our love for metal and a gothic look was Black Veil Brides. Every band that we’ve ever listened to has influenced us in one way or another and through osmosis we’ve fused those sounds through the Dianthvs portal and created a sound we can call our own. Over time our musical influences have changed for the heavier. Since we’ve been incorporating harsh vocals, we’ve really begun to dive into the style of deathcore, listening to bands like Lorna Shore and we’ve always vibed with Suicide Silence too.

What inspired the name change from Dianthus to Dianthvs? (Jackie) We decided to modify our name to further distinguish our band on streaming sites. When we started adding harsh vocals in, we felt that the name change was more fitting, adding to the modern edge and gothic aesthetic. Our fans responded well to this change and were very supportive of the new direction.

Favorite piece(s) in your current live rig? (Jessica) I’m really loving my Pearl Demon direct drive double bass pedals ...they are smooth like butter. I’ve dialed them in just right for my heel-toe technique...and of course, I always favor my TAMA Starclassic Bubinga/Birch drum set! (Jackie) My Quad Cortex is my favorite piece of gear at the moment. I love it because there are endless possibilities to shape guitar tone and discover unique sounds. It’s also very portable and there’s a ton of effects that you can access. I can also count on my EMG Pickups no matter what guitar I’m playing.

Favorite gig(s) you’ve played so far? (Jessica) Hands down, the BEST show we’ve played so far was this past December with the legendary Bay Area thrashers, Death Angel. We were very honored to kick off the 9th Annual “Another Death Angel Christmas Show” on a Saturday night. The show took place at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. We also shared the stage with Vio-lence, another group of Bay Area titans. We’d always wanted to play out in San Francisco and this was our very first appearance there so it was truly special for us. It was a sold-out show and definitely the best Christmas gift we’ve ever received!

What are your All-Time Top 5 favorite albums? (Jackie) Together, our top 5 favorite albums of ALL-TIME are: ‘The Black Parade’ (My Chemical Romance), ‘This is the End of Control’ (Cherri Bomb), ‘Set the World on Fire’ (Black Veil Brides), ‘Masks’ (Eyes Set to Kill), and ‘The Poison’ (Bullet for My Valentine).

What’s your favorite scary movies to watch during the Halloween season? (Jackie) During the spooky season, we always have the ‘IT‘ movies going, the ones with Bill Skarsgård. We also enjoy watching ‘The Nun’ and ‘The Woman in Black’. We love when scary movies have a Gothic/Victorian aesthetic and vibe.

What’s next for Dianthvs? (Jessica) Our next plan of attack is the release of our third studio album and more shows supporting that. We are currently in the studio wrapping up the final tracks and are very stoked for the world to hear our evolved sound. This year has been a time of personal and musical growth for us. We can’t wait to unveil more new music soon!
